I've had to translate a whole bunch of letters from English to Finnish for my grandparents, and doing it using a translator saves a ton of time as I don't have to actually produce the text, I can just read both sides afterwards and as long as every sentence matches in meaning, I can move to the next one. But I wouldn't trust it to actually be correct for the entire thing, because it never is, and if someone who doesn't understand one of the languages would do it they would never spot the mistakes either.

I think it was the Meta chat bot doing pedo stuff with kids that was the turning point. Time will tell.

Companies that tested their technology in a handful of supermarkets, pubs, and on websites set them to predict whether a person looks under 25, not 18, allowing a wide error margin for algorithms that struggle to distinguish a 17-year-old from a 19-year-old. AI face scans were never designed for children seeking asylum, and risk producing disastrous, life-changing errors. Algorithms identify patterns in the distance between nostrils and the texture of skin; they cannot account for children who have aged prematurely from trauma and violence. They cannot grasp how malnutrition, dehydration, sleep deprivation, and exposure to salt water during a dangerous sea crossing might profoundly alter a child’s face. Goddamn, this is horrible. Imagine leaving shitty AI to determine the fate of this girl : 'Psychologically broken,' 8-year-old Sama loses her hair

Shitstack. Everyone and their mother has a substack and a lot of it just low quality "articles." Meanwhile the company is trying to attract investors by claiming it's a tech company when it's really a mediocre media company.

Most still are/can be. Enough that I find it hard to believe people are missing out without podcasts through these paid services.

They really do! It's nice to read something that's clearly hand crafted and high quality, especially the big news roundups that you do, as opposed to the usual SEO slop most news sites have. It's a treat every time a new one comes out.

HMD feature phones are such a let down. The Polish language translation within the system is clearly automated translation - the words used sometimes don't make sense. CloudFone apps are also not available in Europe. The HMD 110 4G (2024, not 2023) has the Unisoc T127 chipset which supports hotspot, but HMD deliberately chose not to include it. I know because the Itel Neo R60+ has hotspot with the same chipset. At least they made Nokia XR21 in Europe for a while.
