Mastodon won't show a list of followers for @colours
It has an orderedcollection at https://colours.bots.edent.tel/followers which paginates properly.
The mimetype and JSON are all correct, I think.
You can check out the source code at https://gitlab.com/edent/activity-bot/
What magical incantation do I need to do to help Mastodon see the details of the account's followers?

@Edent i might be wrong but i think mastodon doesn't try to read this list. from my experience, it doesn't seem interested in the follower list (or even count) from remote servers.

@Edent @julian i just followed @colours .. before i followed it said 0 followers. now it says 1.2k followers. but then there's a message saying the user prefers not to make follower info public.

No, Lemmy does not implement either strategy, they rely on 1b12 only. If NodeBB is receiving parts of a topic that don't resolve up to the root-level post that might be something we can fix. Hey rimu@piefed.social thanks for responding (and sorry for the late reply!) I am not married to the Announce([Article|Note|Page]) approach, so I am definitely open to Create([Article|Note|Page]) with a back-reference. I think I went the former direction because there is a known fallback mechanism — the Announce is treated as a share/boost/repost as normal. However, sending the Create also is fine I think. However, do we need a backreference? In my limited research, it seems that Piefed, et al. picks the first Group actor and associates the post with that community. If I sent over a Create(Article) with two Group actors addressed, could Piefed associate the post with the first, and initiate a cross-post with the remaining Group actors? Secondly, is how to handle sync. 1b12 relies on communities having reciprocal followers in order for two-way synchronization to be established. @renchap@oisaur.com how does RFC9421 differ from Mastodon's existing support for HTTP Signatures? Does this mean you're moving away from cavage-12? That's important to know, and if you're looking for an implementor to handle double-knocking, that is something I can put together for you.. we don't do it at current.

As far as I understand, most (all?) fediverse #ActivityPub software does not use the Client-to-server protocol from the specs (https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#client-to-server-interactions) but rather use custom APIs instead.

@trwnh@mastodon.social but why must a separate account be made? Account fragmentation is yet another unsolved problem because the new user on account B is functionally useless: no followers, etc. and the content isn't automatically available to the followers of the user on instance A.

@trwnh@mastodon.social yes, it is in regards to audience no longer being sent out by Lemmy. While it's defined in 1b12 it seems to be ancillary now, so updating that property would mean Lemmy would need to add support for it back.. not the end of the world.

@philipp@social.anoxinon.de I kind of think this is really missing the forest for the trees if your rational is CO2 emissions... I mean, a far greater generator of CO2 emissions would be every single Mastodon instance caching every piece of media it sees...
