Competent Politicians are well aware that they're not experts on everything and hence hire domain experts to help them understand those domains and actually make informed decisions about them. Mind you, I suspect this specifically is more a side effect of the profound problems with Dishonesty and Cronyism that the UK has: basically they tackled drought as a negative perception of the Government problem, so set up a talk group to project the impression that the Government was doing something about it and chose as head of it (and to be well paid for it) somebody whose greatest qualification for it was being their mate, all of which is very typically in British power circles. The natural consequence of such things is them producing fancy press releases which look absolutelly moronic for domain experts, but since most of the people who read such releases are not domain experts, that's usually fine and in fact advances the true purpose of that "group" (managing perceptions). Even with the Tech Press internationally picking this up and making fun of it, since the very same people who play these power games over there also control the local Press, they might very well get away in Britain itself with a press release with even such a moronic idea as this, as it will be spinned to make them look good.

If there really, truly was no way to tie back proving your age to who proved their age, then surely this is a good thing? Still nope. The government shouldn't be putting up mandatory barriers for what adults watch in the privacy of their own home. It's a huge overreach. Imagine being an adult in your 40s, living alone without a minor anywhere near you, and having to prove you're an adult with a fucking Android app every time you want to open your liquor cabinet. That's how this feels to me, and I find it extremely offensive. Like, get out of my life. And then this age gating crap doesn't even solve the problem, and has the potential to make things worse, because only the major players like pornhub and reddit will comply. For shits and giggles, I set my VPN to UK the other day, and was able to find non-age gated porn in no time. So this is just driving minors who want to view porn to more sketchy, less moderated sites.

I wonder how betrayed the people in the Appalachian feel when their supposed "own" Vance stood for this.

Then that's changed since the last time I toyed with the idea. Which, granted, was probably 20 years ago...

i mean as a core feature of a watch/smartwatch in general. garmin is going above and beyond compared to the competition in that area, and that's great. But that doesn't mean every other smartwatch manufacturer arbitrarily locking traditional watch features behind paywalls. and yeah apple does fitness themed commercials for apple watch because it does help with fitness a ton out of the box. just not specifically guided workouts.
