Seems like a lot of this technology is very untested and there are too many variables to make it where it should be out on the roads.

At one time I worked for IBM, supporting a nationwide company. There was a top guy who (like in the above story) thought he was hot shit. I think he was something like the CFO, but his ineptitude was recognized and he was pushed out. This company allowed people to move to a lower position, and he always thought he knew more about computers than everyone else, so he took the position of CTO. One day I got a call from him, ranting that Outlook wouldn't open and these computers were hopelessly broken. The normal procedure was to remote connect into the caller's computer to directly fix any problems, but he decided he was smarter than the tech support people, and refused to allow me to access his machine. Fortunately I had direct contact with the on-site tech guy, who knew what he would be facing and went to the CTO's office. When he got back a couple minutes later, I asked him what the issue was. "Outlook was already open, it was just minimized to the task bar."

I don't think Musk or Trump have any charisma, but apparently a lot of people see (inherited) wealth as charisma.

With administrative, I meant that IT is a about information flow - defining rules how data is consumed, transformed and ultimately output. These by definition of a classic business I'd see as administrative. I agree the wording isn't good, and I didn't mean it as in "anyone working in IT is just performing administrative tasks", but rather that the field of IT is traditionally more of an enabler of other businesses. The mechanic is usually the actual worker - you run a repair shop - but his spare parts management is an administrative task, and nowadays usually implemented by an IT solution.

Standardized testing isn't the end all be all. Manufacturers have wiggle room. Most of the time you can also voluntarily derate yourself. EPA testing is standardized, but there's a surprisingly wide margin that you can test your car at. BMW is pretty famous for derating their HP output so they're closer to whats available at the wheels. Every other manufacturer will measure at the crank (the balls)
