Are you getting notifications from a thread that you don't care about? Do you want to stop those notifications?
You can do this by using Mastodon's "Mute conversation" feature:
1. Log in through your server’s website or web app
2. Go to a notification you’ve received from the thread you want to mute
3. Click ⋯ on the notification and select "Mute conversation"No one will know you've done it, and it will only affect notifications from that thread.

@FediTips It seems there are limitations to this though. Apparently different replies at different points affect which "conversation" is actually being referred to even though it all stems back to a same post further back.
Someday what we really need is a way to remove your tag as a default from new posts so when people post a new post they would have to manually add it if they actually wanted to tag you.

It generally works, so it's worth doing. If you start getting notifications from a different branch of the thread you can do it again on notifications from that branch.

@FediTips Yeah, just I got particularly annoyed the other day (on a different account) where the same one just kept coming up despite me hitting mute. They must have just been branching off like mad or something, lol.
I guess I would have had to have found my original post and muted from there, but it seems to have finally disappeared for me for now anyway.
Still, I see a lot of "please remove me from this conversation" posts and it strikes me that if there was a way for a person to actually do that themselves, it would really make a lot of people happier.

Mute conversation does usually work, but unfortunately most of the apps don't have it as an option, which is why you have to go on the website. I think that's why a lot of people are unware of it.
" where the same one just kept coming up despite me hitting mute."
...aahh okay, that sounds like a bug. If it happens again might be worth reporting?

@FediTips I think they were just branching it over and over or something. I probably would have had to go all the way back to my original post and manually mute from there.
Anyway, I was just expressing a feeling that a more active removal of one's tag from a conversation might make some people happier. Just a side thought. Probably wouldn't happen anyway.

Ah sorry to hear, that sounds really annoying
Yeah, can see why someone would want their tag removed if the muting isn't working.

feditips@social.growyourown.services correct, it mutes just that branch, because Mastodon doesn't understand that the entire reply tree is something that can exist.
When you mute a topic on NodeBB you mute it for good
