Well, #NodeBB is now up and running. Still need to do a lot of setup, but it seems to be working! A detailed account of my philosophical and technical struggles will follow in a few days.

@julian since you offered: my user is having an issue with size limits on uploads. She is trying to upload some profile pictures that are below the size limit but the application is saying that they are too big.

I was able to upload a profile photo with no problem.

Trying to triage, I can't find any logs that could pertain to it, do you have any ideas where I might look for clues?

The upload size can be configured in the ACP (under Settings -> Uploads), but you'll also need to update your reverse proxy config to allow larger uploads too.

@Yuvalne got a "Maximum allowed file size is 256kb - please upload a smaller file" for files that were 217.3 KiB and 152.9 KiB.

I was able to upload a profile picture that was 139.8 KiB and a cover picture that is 1.8 MiB.
