Let's be frank about it, the second he dropped the (D) after his name, he officially became a lame duck. Even if people were willing to overlook the corruption and the corruption to get out of the trial for his corruption, no non-Democrat is going to get elected Mayor of NYC in the near future.

The crypto industry produces so little jobs. Just conceptually server farms that run single applications or pretty much marketing firms that make advertising coin dumps. Companies that employ single digit people locally

From everything I've read, the New York constitution allows her to remove him since he has been charged. Though it may be too late now.
The common theory is she didn't want a special election that Cuomo could win without going through a primary.

Nope, and it's actually pretty clever what happened. The judge in the case basically let him go (which is what Trump wanted) but in such a way that the DoJ can't ever relitigate it (something Trump didn't want).
Justice was denied, imo, but under the circumstances, the judge managed to thread the needle and keep Trump from being able to blackmail him into doing his bidding.
