  • I dunno, I think there's credence to considering it as a worry.

Like with an addictive substance: yeah, some people are going to be dangerously susceptible to it, but that doesn't mean there shouldn't be any protections in place...

Now what the protections would be, I've got no clue. But I think a blanket, "They'd fall into psychosis anyway" is a little reductive.

    I don’t think I suggested it wasn’t worrisome, just that it’s expected.

If you think about it, AI is tuned using RLHF, or Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback. That means the only thing AI is optimizing for is “convincingness”. It doesn’t optimize for intelligence, anything seems like intelligence is literally just a side effect as it forever marches onward towards becoming convincing to humans.

“Hey, I’ve seen this one before!” You might say. Indeed, this is exactly what happened to social media. They optimized for “engagement”, not truth, and now it’s eroding the minds of lots of people everywhere. AI will do the same thing if run by corporations in search of profits.

Left unchecked, it’s entirely possible that AI will become the most addictive, seductive technology in history.

  • Imagine a boot SO mighty that if it exists it might crush you, so you need to lick it ahead of time so that someday if it does exist, it might not crush you.

What if it’s an infinitely mighty boot? Ya know what’d make it even more mighty? Existing. Therefore it already exists. Start licking!

    I just did a theology!

  • The issue is not lack of logic and consistency, the trouble is a completely different reference frame.

Let me put it, to grossly simplify, in this way: Imagine you'd be dreaming while awake, no way to stop it, and would have to integrate all that craziness in real time. It's not that dreams make no sense -- they all have their rhyme and reason -- it's that they're talking a completely different language.

You might be hearing, out of nowhere, a cello note off to the side, move your gaze there, notice "that's my trashcan that makes no sense", and then be lost, and panic, lose faith in your senses, and that way lies psychosis. More productively, you say "ok mind which thought with as of yet unformed discernible meaning was it that you wanted me to pay attention to", look for the place the thought came from (as schizo, you can tell with your kinaesthetic sense), consider it for a while, still being oblivious of the meaning, and then go on with your life.

    We're weird.

Oh, back to randomness: It can get you out of a rut and I do suppose that's how Terry used it, aware of it or not, and framing it however he did. Could also be using it to self-soothe, as in, distracting from a negative spiral. There's worse habits.

God, with almost 100% certainty, means "the genome and how it's speaking to me through my instincts" in his dialect. Because that's what it always means, what it always meant, for everyone, it meant that when it was the ancestors, it meant that when it became more detailed and became gods, it meant that when people realised all the gods are actually one thing, the theologists are just confused AF because politics and physics and cabbage-heads got into the mix. And so much for my schizo rant. Don't discount what I say because I'm crazy, the reason you consider me crazy is because it's true.

God, with almost 100% certainty, means "the genome and how it's speaking to me through my instincts" in his dialect.

Genetic instincts don’t control the patterns generated by pseudorandom number generators as a means of communication.

  • I've been trying to configure ChatGPT tell me if I'm wrong in a question or statement but damn it never does unless I keep probing for support or links. I've been having the feeling that it has become worse with latter models. Glad but also sad to see I was right.

Anybody know other LLM that are more "trustworthy"* and capable of searching online for more information?

Edit; *trustworthy in quotes because of course people will jump on this. I know the limitations of LLM, I don't need you to tell me how much you hate everything AI. And I know LLM aren't AI.

I don't need you to tell me how much you hate everything AI

On my Lemmy?? Impossible. I was just told by three different people rather condescendingly and assuming just as much about me that I was suffering from AI brain rot for daring to compare something to AI. The horror.

  • I wouldn't be so certain your chats are confidential.

I'm not concerned if they are using chats for AI training data. In fact, I expect them to continue improving their chatbots. If they were to sell our chat logs to a third party, and those logs went public, then I expect it would quickly torpedo their platform. Even in that case, my account doesn't have my real name anywhere. I gave them an incorrect birth date. I haven't linked any social media to my account. I keep everything set to private. If the logs were to go public, and people could say "Look! This user said all these things!" they still wouldn't know who I was.

Maybe the FBI or NSA could track me down, but talking sexy things to a chatbot isn't illegal. In fact, it may very well become more commonplace. Someday we will likely have androids with AI personalities serving us in our homes.

Ah, I see what you're saying -- that's a great point. It's designed to be entrancing AND designed to actively try to be more entrancing.

    The omniscient Boot requires lubrication!

  • I will be that asshole, you meant to say antisocial != psychopath, or <>, or even antisocial is not psychopath.

Most people will understand regardless, but i don't like when people preface things. I find it to be a micro-aggression as the kids are saying nowadays.

    It's a good thing I wasn't talking to you, then 🙂

I wonder how many AI chatbot accounts the pro-AI places have banned.

They are just trying to stuff you with equation of "rejecting unsubstantiated authority and propaganda" (which is a subset of nihilism similarly to rejection of other unsubstantiated things) to "sowing chaos and destruction of society". BTW, chaos is beneficial for any society. Chaos is how they evolve and find exits out of deadlocks. And rid themselves of degeneracy, which always flourishes on top, because those on top are subject to negative selection. Honestly the whole article is absolutely disgusting police boot licking piece of crap, of the "nothing to hide" and "the law is sacred even if made illegally" and "don't question demands" kind. Except, of course, it's wrapped into the boy being "anti-LGBTQZPN" and "accelerationist-extremist", which is pretty normal, Israeli and Turkish propaganda too uses these in the way of "look, we allow gay parades and have something appearing like western democracy, so we are good, and our victims are not like that". OK, so the description probably is just about a kid with some disorders who got burnt out from the idiots surrounding him. Every time you hear "he was normal and had meaning in life and we understood him and then he got depressed and closed", it's probably just that - ran out of spoons to play along to mouthbreather family thinking they understand everything. The things surrounding it - I think they are good. Between loyalty to entrenched non-transparent authority and rebellion with neo-Nazi symbols I'd choose the latter 10 times of 10. Also when "accelerationist" means that the institutions have already decayed and it's better to break them before they've born more monsters - I agree with that. I thought the same when I was 15 and realized that democracies around us are not real in the sense that they were even in 1950s. But, of course, if we assume the article is deliberate propaganda, one can suggest that this is the intended second layer - to make you more sympathetic to such ideology.

Incredibly well said. And couldn't agree more! Especially after working as a game dev for Apple Arcade. We spent months proving to them their saving architecture was faulty and would lead to people losing their save file for each Apple Arcade game they play. We were ignored, and then told it was a dev problem. Cut to the launch of Arcade: every single game has several 1 star reviews about players losing their save files. This cannot be fixed by devs as it's an Apple problem, so devs have to figure out novel ways to prevent the issue from happening using their own time and resources. 1.5 years later, Apple finishes restructuring the entire backend of Arcade, fixing the problem. They tell all their devs to reimplement the saving architecture of their games to be compliant with Apples new backend or get booted from Arcade. This costs devs months of time to complete for literally zero return (Apple Arcade deals are upfront - little to no revenue is seen after launch). Apple used their trillions of dollars to ignore a massive backend issue that affected every player and developer on Apple Arcade. They then forced every dev to make an update to their game at their own expense just to keep it listed on Arcade. All while directing user frustration over the issue towards developers instead of taking accountability for launching a faulty product. Literally, these companies are run by sociopaths that have egos bigger than their paychecks. Issues like this are ignored as it's easier to place the blame on someone down the line. People like your manager end up getting promoted to the top of an office heirachy of bullshit, and everything the company makes just gets worse until whatever corpse is left is sold for parts to whatever bigger dumb company hasn't collapsed yet. It's really painful to watch, and even more painful to work with these idiots.

It's not just tax credits for new cars, they are also getting rid of the Used EV Tax Credit which has helped to keep the prices of used EVs (relatively) lower.

A family member with no inherent moral compass or empathy, whose eyes, ears, thoughts and agency belong to teams of trained profit-seekers in a different country. I disapprove of this humanization of software.
