Yup, I'm the same way. If I could work in FOSS, I'd be happy to take a pay cut, but FOSS doesn't pay anywhere near good enough. So it'll remain a hobby. As such, I'm pretty reasonable about what needs to be open source, and what's fine being proprietary. For example: OS - must be FOSS games - proprietary is fine, but no privileged access (e.g. kernel level anti-cheat) web browser - must be FOSS web services - proprietary is fine, provided they don't collect a creepy amount of info about me Basically, the more risk there is of a security issue, the more I expect it to be FOSS. And I'm willing to help out too. I've submitted patches to Lemmy and other FOSS projects I use, and I'll donate something similar to what I'd pay for a proprietary app for certain projects.

A digital ID, by itself, isn't much of an issue and can be very convenient for the user as well. Even better, it can be setup in a more privacy conserving way. For instance, when you have to provide your ID today, you often have to give companies a copy of your ID, which isn't really favorable to the owner of that ID. With digital ID, it's easier to give/revoke access to your ID or mask certain information the other party doesn't need to know. Most ID scans are mainly done to verify the person has a legitimate ID anyways and presented it, making this digital can be an improvement. Where it does get black mirror-ey is when you have to use that digital identity to basically log in to the internet and all your internet activity is logged to your ID. The shit the government can pull with such information is mindbogglingly bad.

Wait, we need compulsory ID checks to visit adult content but no checks with Chatgpt who is there to help you plan your suicide? We are about to face an epidemic of AI cat fishing, scams, and unhealthy relationships that corporations are pushing on us. This is like the Atomic bomb only with propaganda and psychological manipulation. The war for the human mind just got a shortcut and the Techbros are in charge.

Very interesting paper, and grade A irony to begin the title with “delving” while finding that “delve” is one of the top excess words/markers of LLM writing. Moreover, the authors highlight a few excerpts that “illustrate the LLM-style flowery language” including By meticulously delving into the intricate web connecting […] and […], this comprehensive chapter takes a deep dive into their involvement as significant risk factors for […]. …and then they clearly intentionally conclude the discussion section thus We hope that future work will meticulously delve into tracking LLM usage more accurately and assess which policy changes are crucial to tackle the intricate challenges posed by the rise of LLMs in scientific publishing. Great work.

I wouldn't trust windows to follow their don't screenshot API, whether out of ignorance or malice.

I just used a free online thing called PDF2Go to split a giant PDF into 4 smaller files. It let me directly download the resulting 4 files without signing up for anything, and they work perfectly on my box (linux mint). Tbh I don't think the UI is super intuitive but I just googled "How to split a file on pdf2go" and found clear instructions. It has a lot of other tools I have not explored. Not affiliated with the site in any way, sharing because Adobe is so freaking expensive. https://www.pdf2go.com/
