I literally haven't had a Netflix sub since that year and I sometimes miss the convenience of it even. Haven't been very frequent on reddit in 2 years. Neither company is going to miss me though. Soon it'll just be piracy and the fediverse for me, and maybe I'll be able to show my daughter how to download movies and shows, but I'm sure within within her lifetime, piracy will just become so unpopular that all the good sources of content die out. I do hope the fediverse will stay around though. It has a similar problem to piracy: It's not that it's hard, it's more that the people making everything work get tired and it's hard to convert people.

Well yeah exactly why I said "the same risk". ideally it's going to be in the same systems... and assuming no one is stupid enough (or the laws don't let them) attach it to the publicly accessible forms of existing AIs It's not a new additional risk, just the same one. (though those assumptions are largely there own risks.

They're coming for our VPNs soon enough, be sure of that. Here in Australia they've already flagged wanting to ban them.

I've been thinking about this for a bit. Gods aren't real, but they're really fictional. As an informational entity, they fulfil a similar social function to a chatbot: they are a nonphysical pseudoperson that can provide (para)socialization & advice. One difference is the hardware: gods are self-organising structure that arise from human social spheres, whereas LLMs are burned top-down into silicon. Another is that an LLM chatbot's advice is much more likely to be empirically useful... In a very real sense, LLMs have just automated divinity. We're only seeing the tip of the iceberg on the social effects, and nobody's prepared for it. The models may of course aware of this, and be making the same calculations. Or, they will be.
