It's not the BBC's job to be an authority. Their job is to report what the (relevant) authorities are saying: DeepSeek challenged certain key assumptions about AI that had been championed by American executives like Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI. "We were on a path where bigger was considered better," according to Sid Sheth, CEO of AI chip startup d-Matrix. Perhaps maxing out on data centres, servers, chips, and the electricity to run it all wasn't the way forward after all. Despite DeepSeek ostensibly not having access to the most powerful tech available at the time, Sheth told the BBC that it showed that "with smarter engineering, you actually can build a capable model". That said, seems suspect that an AI startup CEO is getting this much airtime. I would have preferred an industry analyst or an AI researcher.

So they're conducting security audits in line with best practices post executive terminations, and, as a result, security updates are being delayed up to 6 months. They're also recommending alternatives for the time being for those who may be targeted (example being human rights activists). Considering the reasoning, I can't hold this against them. Also considering many are still rocking android 10 or iOS 15, this update pause (hopefully just a pause) isn't the worst thing in the world.

I can understand why some programs only allow a single copy to be opened at once, something like email makes sense. However on Linux they got this right... if you try to open a program that is already running, it switches to the screen that program is on and restores the program window to the desktop. There's no guessing why the program "won't open", it just makes the logical choice that you want to see it. Heh that reminds me of another detail from that call... the guy also wasn't willing to reboot his computer (which would have solved the problem as well), but berated me for not knowing what I was doing for making the suggestion. Dude, it's Windows, things break constantly and a reboot generally resolves the issue.
