  • Oh ok, sorry. I wasn't aware that the fediverse restricted algorithms

It does not restrict them per se, it's just that the mechanics of what to show you are either simply based on posting time, or amount of "interactions" or "interactions/time" or similar simple algorithms. It would be possible to analyze posts for specific content and show you for example ragebait only, but i doubt that pull request would be accepted - you would probably have to make a fork of your fediverse platform and implement it there.

  • In possible defense of this woman...

So initially, she's a woman brought on for a top leadership position to a problematic company. This is her chance to make some money and turn things around... And woman having top roles in business is a great thing. 100 years ago, that simply did not happen. Although there's still a fight for gay rights, trans rights, and the right of marginalized people, and there's still people being genocided and with no human rights, and people being tortured, that doesn't mean the struggle for woman's rights is over and that there's not some value to women taking top positions at large corporations.

And she made some progress on making that company less unappealing to advertisers, and did some good things...

AND THEN came the Elon Musk Hitler salute. And she probably had invested a lot of time and energy into the role, was being paid well, and was frustrated. Is she, as a woman in business, required to walk away from her efforts just because Elon Musk is a PR disaster and prejudiced person?

And then THIS finally happened. Her whole thing was just to be a businesswoman, be professional, and help make things profitable for this business unit, and this new AI change (which she almost certainly had nothing to do with and completely sucker punched her out of nowhere) completely undermined her.

So she did the smart thing and walked away. It was too much, it was undercutting her effort, she's moving on. Her last tweet was also very professional and corporate. She's a businesswoman.

Should she have left sooner? Should she have taken a stand against transphobia and some of the awful things on Xitter earlier? Yes, but also she had a boss, she had worked hard to get to where she was, and perhaps she wanted to make more money before exiting.

Does anyone know if she personally has done anything that indicates bigotry or prejudice towards trans people or Jewish people or anyone being genocided or tortured? I think her situation is somewhat understandable.

Even if we want to work toward a more egalitarian world in which all people have rights and are respected, woman will still be in organizations, most likely (if global warming doesn't kill us all), and so shouldn't woman be able to succeed?

Yes, but also she had a boss, she had worked hard to get to where she was, and perhaps she wanted to make more money before exiting.

And that is somehow an excuse? Being a business women trying to succeed does not give her a pass for anything.

  • We were talking about Xitter, not Mastodon...

  • Who is liable for the output of Grok anyway? Would Germany like to ask about now

Nobody! That's the main value of AI!

  • Yes, but also she had a boss, she had worked hard to get to where she was, and perhaps she wanted to make more money before exiting.

And that is somehow an excuse? Being a business women trying to succeed does not give her a pass for anything.

Honestly the above comment infuriated me.

They would not be defending this person if they were a man.

Having lower expectations of women isn't progressive, it isn't feminist. It's infantising. It's misogyny of lower expectations. "Oh you can't expect women to understand the difference between right and wrong."

A woman who is happy to support Elon is every bit as bad as a man that is happy to support Elon. Supporting a nazi is supporting a nazi.

  • We were talking about Xitter, not Mastodon...

and we are talking about reasons why people are still there - those two aren't one, because you can read their posts somewhere else too. Except if you meant that people are still there because those two are still there.

  • and we are talking about reasons why people are still there - those two aren't one, because you can read their posts somewhere else too. Except if you meant that people are still there because those two are still there.

You're missing the point. Ask yourself why those people are still there.

  • This post did not contain any content.

    Hot dog!

  • You're missing the point. Ask yourself why those people are still there.

Hey, mastodon isn't that bad! When bluesky runs out of funny money and has to enshittify it'll be the one left standing!

You talk too much like a bot.

  • Hey, mastodon isn't that bad! When bluesky runs out of funny money and has to enshittify it'll be the one left standing!

Once again, not talking about Mastodon

  • bluesky is populated "enough".

Not if you want to make a living of it. People that do commissions tell me this. It's just what it is.

  • Real translation: thanks for the paycheck. Remember me when you need another yes person to be your scapegoat.

Scapegoat? Is anyone actually blaming her for the Hitler shit? I have my beliefs about where those orders came from.

  • Nah, they're saying sales have only dropped by 10% from 2024, in the US. Which is fucked up.

Wonder if that's because left aligned types had already quit buying them in '24? He was already being a total fuckhead during the election at that point.

Hell of a way to squeeze a statistic.

Yeah reading it again, they are saying year over year, last month (June) sales were down 10%.

They phrased it very oddly. Like the kind of way you phrase things when you are trying to spin an agenda.

None of that helps. The facts speak for themselves. We don’t need to embellish to make the point. That only invites challenge to our credibility.

    Sounds like Ashley Barrett

It seems that multiple people don't get what you are trying to say, and i would really like to know. if you have the time, could you elaborate?

I completely agree. Making statistics lie is a dark art.

The fascist fuckheads and their followers are doing so much blatantly evil shit that there is no need to embellish anything. The plain facts are plenty apalling all by themselves.

  • It seems that multiple people don't get what you are trying to say, and i would really like to know. if you have the time, could you elaborate?

I honestly don't know how to be more clear. It's called a social graph. The most important thing about a social network, above everything else (for normies), is having lots of users. Cory and Molly both know and understand that if they left Xitter, they would lose access to a substantial amount of their audience, so they both stay, despite being some of the platform's harshest critics and the biggest supporters of it's alternatives. That's the answer to the question "why would anyone use it?". The social graph.

but the only way to break through this is to change the platform. Since both of them already keep their posts equal on both sites, it makes switching easier for everyone; removing their content from Xitter would be an incentive for others to switch.

The ideal way would be to try and band together a large amount of "regular posters" and completely switch on an agreed date together; that would have a pull effect for others to do the same.

I don't use any GUI... I use terraform in the terminal or via CI/CD. There is an API and also a Terraform provider for Proxmox, and I can use that, together with Ansible and shell scripts to manage VMs, but I was looking for k8s support. Again, it works fine for small environments, with a bit of manual work and human intervention, but for larger ones, I need a bit more. I moved away from a few VMs acting as k8s nodes, to k8s as a service (at work).

it becomes a form of censorship when snall websites and forums shut down because they don’t have the capacity to comply. In this scenario that's not a consideration. We're talking about algorithmically-driven content, which wouldn't apply to Lemmy, Mastodon, or many mom-and-pop sized pages and forums. Those have human moderation anyway, which the big sites don't. If you're making editorial decisions by weighting algorithmically-driven content, it's not censorship to hold you accountable for the consequences of your editorial decisions. (Just as we would any major media outlet.)

ChatGPT is not a doctor. But models trained on imaging can actually be a very useful tool for them to utilize. Even years ago, just before the AI “boom”, they were asking doctors for details on how they examine patient images and then training models on that. They found that the AI was “better” than doctors specifically because it followed the doctor’s advice 100% of the time; thereby eliminating any kind of bias from the doctor that might interfere with following their own training. Of course, the splashy headline “AI better than doctors” was ridiculous. But it does show the benefit of having a neutral tool for doctors to utilize, especially when looking at images for people who are outside of the typical demographics that much medical training is based on. (As in mostly just white men. For example, everything they train doctors on regarding knee imagining comes from images of the knees of coal miners in the UK some decades ago)

I spent way too long researching the morning. That industry implies a much greater population that is attracted to children. Things get more nuanced. People are attracted to different stages, like prebubesant, early adolescence, and mid to late adolescence. It seems like an important distinction because this is a common mental disorder. I was ready to write this comment about my fear that there's a bunch of evil pedophiles living among us who are simply deterred by legal or social pressures. It seems more like the extreme stigma of pedophilia has prevented individuals from seeking assistance and has resulted in more child sexual abuse. This sort of disorder can be caused by experiencing this abuse at a younger age. When I was religious, we worked closely with an organization to help victims of trafficking. We had their stories. They entered our lives. I took care of some of these kids. As a victim of sexual abuse when I was kid, I had a hatred for these kinds of people. I feel like my brain is melting seeing how there is a high chance of people in my life being attracted to children. This isn't really to justify the industry. I'm just realizing that general harassing people openly about it might not be helping the situation.

Well if they're collating data, not that difficult to add a new table for gun ownership.

I kinda don't want anyone other than a doctor determining it, tbh. Fuck the human bean counters just as much as the AI ones. Hopefully we can just start growing organs instead of having to even make such a grim decision and everyone can get new livers. Even if they don't need them.
