UK’s Porn Providers Agree to Age Checks by July 25; Aylo, Owner of Pornhub, YouPorn, and RedTube, Will Add Age Assurance Checks.

  • By 25 July, all sites and apps that allow pornography – whether they are dedicated adult sites or social media, search or gaming services – must use highly effective age checks to ensure children are not normally able to encounter it. Online firms who publish their own pornography are already required to protect children from it, and thousands of sites have already introduced robust age checks in response.

Major porn providers operating in the UK have confirmed to Ofcom that they will introduce effective checks by next month’s deadline in order to comply with the new rules. They include PornHub, the most-visited pornographic service in the UK. Other services who are happy to be named at this stage include BoyfriendTV, Cam4, FrolicMe, inxxx, Jerkmate, LiveHDCams, MyDirtyHobby, RedTube, Streamate, Stripchat, Tube8, and YouPorn. This represents a broad range of pornography services accessed in the UK.

Monitoring compliance with these new duties is a priority for Ofcom. If any company fails to comply with its new duties, Ofcom can impose fines and – in very serious cases – apply for a court order to prevent the site or app from being available in the UK. As part of our work enforcing the Online Safety Act, we have already launched investigations into four porn providers and won’t hesitate to take further action from July.

So much for being better than the US. Welcome to the downfall of modern society UK.

I can not hear that anymore!

Children need awareness, rather than shielding, concealment and tabooing.

Amen. It’s like they think that somehow it is better to only encounter the world when you are in college and alone.

Oh no. Some hackers hacked out database and released all the ID information on high profile people. Oh such whoopsie, we made.

Depends entirely on how it's implemented, because the website doesn't need to know who you are, only verify that you are over 18.
Which can be done reasonably securely - you generate a random ID on a secure service (e.g here in Finland, we use our online banking stuff for official verification purposes), give that ID to the website, and the only communication between the two of them is "Is id 123 valid and an adult? Yes/No".

Now, if that "secure service", most likely a government contract done as cheaply as possible turns out not to be, and they keep logs linking those IDs to the URLs requesting verification, then the entire thing goes belly up.

  • It's been happening for decades.

Indeed, it has been the same here.

So your bank now knows you accessed certain websites. And likely one or more middleware services. And you are okay with that?

Was an example of the security, not who is running the service. But I mean, guess who knows if you pay for OnlyFans or stuff like that?
    Your bank.

And like I said, it's only really secure if the service doesn't keep a database of logs connecting the two.

I seriously feel this. I've found a little site that dgaf what country or state you're in. I use a VPN if I want a change.

People are not gonna agree with me but, it makes sense to have age verification just like you have to verify your age for tobacco or alcohol.

  • People are not gonna agree with me but, it makes sense to have age verification just like you have to verify your age for tobacco or alcohol.

Would it make sense for alcohol age verification if every household had beer taps installed? Because thats what internet is.

  • mastodon has porn and you don't even need an account to use search. also, this will just drive people to use sketchy sites that won't follow the rules.

You can literally find porn on search engines. Google images is a bit restrictive but Bing, Duckduckgo etc will straight up show porn in the image or video searches.

  • Are they going to add a box to enter your age like on Steam that you immediately roll back to 1st January 1901?

    6/9/1969....every time

Its certainly the parents responsibility to make sure those kids dont drink. And if they do, there should be repercussions just like we have the same expectations with Gun use.

But it's disanalgous anyways. We make stores and establishments check for IDs. These websites are no different from these establishments, therefore they should also verify the age.

So all of the mainstream porn will be blocked, leaving all of the niche and special-interest stuff available? Excellent, excellent...

Just saw this article linked in a ThePrimeagen video. I didn't watch the video, but I did read the article, and all of this article is exactly what I'm always saying when I'm complaining about current UI trends and why I'm so picky about the software I use and also the tools I use to write software. I shouldn't have to be picky, but it seems like developers (professional and hobbyist alike) don't care anymore and users don't have standards.

I'm surprised it isn't already illegal to install software on someone's phone without their consent or knowledge. Sounds like a form of property damage.

From what I know, those agents can be absolutely fantastic as long as they run under strict guidance of a senior developer who really knows how to use them. Fully autonomous agents sound like a terrible idea.

This is where the magic of near meaningless corpo-babble comes in. The layoffs are part of a plan to aspirationally acheive the goal of $10b revenue by EoY 2025. What they are actually doing is a significant restructuring of the company, refocusing by outside hiring some amount of new people to lead or be a part of departments or positions that haven't existed before, or are being refocused to other priorities... ... But this process also involves laying off 500 of the 'least productive' or 'least mission critical' employees. So, technically, they can, and are, arguing that their new organizational paradigm will be so succesful that it actually will result in increased revenue, not just lower expenses. Generally corpos call this something like 'right-sizing' or 'refocusing' or something like that. ... But of course... anyone with any actual experience with working at a place that does this... will tell you roughly this is what happens: Turns out all those 'grunts' you let go of, well they actually do a lot more work in a bunch of weird, esoteric, bandaid solutions to keep everything going, than upper management was aware of... because middle management doesn't acknowledge or often even understand that that work was being done, because they are generally self-aggrandizing narcissist petty tyrants who spend more time in meetings fluffing themselves up than actually doing any useful management. Then, also, you are now bringing on new, outside people who look great on paper, to lead new or modified apartments... but they of course also do not have any institutional knowledge, as they are new. So now, you have a whole bunch of undocumented work that was being done, processes which were being followed... which is no longer being done, which is not documented.... and the new guys, even if they have the best intentions, now have to spend a quarter or two or three figuring out just exactly how much pre-existing middle management has been bullshitting about, figuring out just how much things do not actually function as they ssid it did... So now your efficiency improving restructuring is actually a chaotic mess. ... Now, this 'right sizing' is not always apocalyptically extremely bad, but it is also essentially never totally free from hiccups... and it increases stress, workload, and tensions between basically everyone at the company, to some extent. Here's Forbes explanation of this phenomenon, if you prefer an explanation of right sizing in corpospeak: https://www.forbes.com/advisor/business/rightsizing/

i mean as a core feature of a watch/smartwatch in general. garmin is going above and beyond compared to the competition in that area, and that's great. But that doesn't mean every other smartwatch manufacturer arbitrarily locking traditional watch features behind paywalls. and yeah apple does fitness themed commercials for apple watch because it does help with fitness a ton out of the box. just not specifically guided workouts.
