How I Started Living Off-Grid with a Portable Solar Kit – What Worked, What Didn’t

  • I’m not someone living in the woods full-time or running everything off solar power. But I was curious about off-grid living and wanted to reduce my reliance on the grid — especially after a few too many power outages and rising electricity bills.

About a year ago, I decided to try it out in a small way. I bought a portable solar generator setup and started using it during camping trips and occasionally at home. Here's what worked, what didn’t, and what I wish I knew from the start.

    What I Bought

I went with the Jackery Explorer 1000 along with two SolarSaga 100W foldable panels. My goal was to run small essentials like a mini fridge, LED lights, and a laptop during camping or during short-term outages.

I chose this setup because I didn’t want to deal with rooftop installations, and I liked the idea of something I could pack up and take anywhere.

    What Went Well

Easy to use: Setup was simple. Plug the panels into the power station, and it starts charging.

Portable: I’ve taken this setup on multiple trips. It fits easily in the car and doesn’t take up much space.

Quiet and clean: Unlike gas generators, this setup is silent and doesn’t smell. That was a big plus for me.

Efficient on sunny days: In good sunlight, it charged fully in about 6 hours.

    What Didn’t Go So Well

I overestimated the battery: I thought 1000Wh would last forever. It doesn’t. If you’re running a fridge, laptop, and charging phones, the power drains quickly.

**Cloudy days were a problem: **No sun means no charge. I hadn’t thought that through and ended up stuck once with a dead battery.

I forgot to unplug things: A couple of times I left devices charging overnight and woke up with a fully drained battery. Rookie mistake, but it happened.

What I Wish I Knew Before Starting

Know your power usage: Every small device adds up. It’s important to understand how much power your appliances use.

Don’t try to do everything at once: Start small and build from there. It’s better to test the waters than to buy everything at once.

Being off-grid changes your habits: I became more aware of what I was using and started planning power use more carefully. It’s a good shift in mindset.

    What I’d Do Differently

Add a second battery for backup

Use a stand or tripod to angle the solar panels for better sun exposure

Track daily power usage to avoid surprises

If you’ve tried something similar or are thinking about it, feel free to share your experience. I’m always interested in learning from what others are doing.

So... they let you uninstall it? Or are we talking about spyware not made by Meta? Because the way I understand it, Meta has been hacking iPhones ever since the App Tracking Protection thing came about. Mostly via the in-app browser. Point is, Tim Cook said Meta can continue to track you, they just have to get your permission first, and even if you said no, they still found a way to do it anyway. Therefore, are Meta products not spyware? (So are Google products. On iPhone, you block ads system-wide with a DNS filter. Same as you do on an unrooted Android phone, since you don't have access to the HOSTS file — rooted users are just using AdAway or something like it to update HOSTS. Anyway, Google apps use Google DNS, which they say makes them faster, but it also has the convenient upshot (to them) of going around your ad blocking, and forcing ads on a user who has explicitly configured their device to block them.)

Just because it's a bad idea doesn't mean it wont be implemented.

Your "perspective" may have been well meant, but to me it reeked of parroting Russian propaganda. Also I get that people used to not want to work for the military. Peace in our time and all that. What civilized person wouldn't want that? But for me that changed when Russia invaded Ukraine again. We cannot afford to just stand by while Russia has their way, and China is waiting in the back to see how it goes. Europe needs to be able to defend itself against aggressors I too thought were a thing of the past. And Europe is working together to achieve that goal. And people who see the military as some sort of establishment that is the enemy can go fuck themselves IMO. AND it remains against everything Turing stood for. So maybe they shouldn't work at a place that honors his memory. But you just go ahead and defend the childishly naive if you want to. But don't expect the least bit of respect from me for tramping all over the memory of Turing, who was an admirable person in every way.

Actually there was just yesterday a story about Corning (The maker of Gorilla glass), that was accused by EU for anti competitive behavior, where Corning entered in positive dialogue, and stated they intended to work fully within regulation. https://lemmy.world/post/33255689 Corning, the US-based manufacturer of Gorilla Glass, has successfully avoided potential European Union antitrust fines of up to $1.25 billion by agreeing to a set of legally binding commitments that address concerns over its exclusive supply agreements for specialty glass used in smartphones and other handheld devices. So yes Musk is an ass, also compared to other companies. And his reaction is confrontational, which is not normal behavior.

If you had asked me during the Obama administration I would have said this a chance of becoming law. Today I give it 0.002%.

That must have taken some diplomacy, but it would have been even more impressive to have convinced Stallman to come too

Back in the day I just assumed everyone was lying. Or trying to get people worked up, and we called them trolls. Learning how to ignore the trolls, and not having trust for strangers on the internet, coupled with the ability to basically not care what random people said is a lost art. Somehow people forgot to give other the people this memo, including the "you don't fucking join social networks as your self". Anonymity makes this all work. Eternal September newbies just didn't get it.
