    I’ll be honest, I really believed in Plebbit.

    The idea of a truly decentralized, peer-to-peer social platform felt like something the internet desperately needed. A space beyond centralized servers, censorship, and platform overlords. Something that wasn’t just “Reddit, but a real shift in how we interact online.

    Plebbit pitched that dream. They talked about p2p everything : hosting, moderation, identity. They made it sound like the future was finally within reach. And I wanted to believe.

    But over time… it became clear. It was all talk. All hype. All roadmap, no road.

    Constant delays with vague excuses.

    Overpromising, under delivering at every stage.

    “Community governance” that never materialized beyond buzzwords.

    A dev team that slowly drifted into silence while the protocol rotted.
    I kept checking in, hoping something had changed. That maybe I’d been too impatient. But no. It wasn’t just slow, it was never real to begin with.

    So, I’m sticking with Lemmy. It’s not perfect, but at least it’s real. Maybe we’ll get the true decentralization we’ve been promised one day

    I mean, twitter sucked when it first launched, too. Doesn't mean it won't get better.

    Not sure why everyone is so hellbent on FOSS software to be in its most usable and polished state on launch but will buy prereleased and/or beta games and put in 10,000 hours into half finished games without batting an eye. The double standard for FOSS developers is insane to me.

    I keep getting the suspicion that many of these flashy projects are red herrings paid by Musk or Zuckerberg or whoever to stop people from actually developing reasonable alternatives.

    Because shit like this keeps happening over and over.

    It varies based on local legislation, so in some places paying ransoms is banned but it's by no means universal. It's totally valid to be against paying ransoms wherever possible, but it's not entirely black and white in some situations. For example, what if a hospital gets ransomed? Say they serve an area not served by other facilities, and if they can't get back online quickly people will die? Sounds dramatic, but critical public services get ransomed all the time and there are undeniable real world consequences. Recovery from ransomware can cost significantly more than a ransom payment if you're not prepared. It can also take months to years to recover, especially if you're simultaneously fighting to evict a persistent (annoyed, unpaid) threat actor from your environment. For the record I don't think ransoms should be paid in most scenarios, but I do think there is some nuance to consider here.

    Well, 'proven wrong' is a bit of a stretch. 'will soon block screen capture' doesn't leave a lot of wiggle room, but also isn't that crazy to read into it that maybe it would block screen capture on the presenters screen... especially if you grant that it might only have control over the teams portion of the screen. I've had it black out windows on my own machine even when not presenting. But further than that, it's not fair to say everything has to be read only from the most or the least charitable viewpoints. Context is a thing and if you're even a little bit familiar with the history of software enshittification, it's reasonable to assume that an uncharitable reading is fair without assuming the app will now melt your computer for spare parts if you try something that is disallowed. 'As shitty as we can get away with' might be a good rule of thumb.

    Especially when the poster does not disclose that it's AI. The perpetual Youtube rabbit hole occasionally lands on one of these for me when I leave it unsupervised, and usually you can tell from the "cover" art. But only if you're looking at it. Because if you just leave it going in the background eventually you start to realize, "Wow, this guy really tripped over the fine line between a groove and rut." Then you click on it and look: Curses! Foiled again. And golly gee, I'm sure glad Youtube took away the option to oughtright block channels. I'm sure that's a total coincidence. W/e. I'm a have-it-on-my-hard-drive kind of bird. Yt-dlp is your friend. Just use it to nab whatever it is you actually want and let your own media player decide how to shuffle and present it. This works great for big name commercial music as well, whereupon the record labels are inevitably dumb enough to post songs and albums in their entirety right there you Youtube. Who even needs piracy sites at that rate? Yoink!

    While I completely agree with you about the absence of one-liners and meme comments, and even more left leaning community, there's still that strong element of "gotcha" in discussions. Also tonnes of people not reading an article before commenting (at a better rate than Reddit probably), and a generally even more doomer attitude is common here.

    I bet every company has at least one employee with right-wing political views. Choosing a product based on some random quotes by employees is stupid.
