Real life people use Threads !? I guess that speaks more to Twitter's decline than Threads' success that the numbers are getting close...
Instagram is extremely popular, and it's heavily promoted inside of there, with Threads content embedded to almost look like Instagram content but when you tap on it it hops you over to Threads. I'm not surprised that they've been able to build a user base while X declines

Doesn't every Instagram user automatically have a Threads account now? (Even if they're unaware of it.)
Meta faking Threads user count that way on top of what's happened with X user count would explain this "milestone" quite easily.
Not sure now, as I stopped using it months ago, but no, they give you annoying teasers and force you to make an account to see more than the cropped pic. So people are actually signing up for this.
