Oh gee I wonder why depressed kids are increasingly online where they are more free to express themselves, in a society where mental health problems are very stigmatized and confiding in someone that you want to kill yourself can get you imprisoned. Also, related post on the general concept of internet addiction and gambling social media addiction. txttletale: pun-ishment888: txttletale: txttletale: going to bat for the concept of internet addiction as someone under 80 is spectacularly funny damn people are spending a lot of time on the combination newspaper/public square/vast searchable library of incomprehensible amounts of information/storefront/private communications/some people's actual job technology. presumably there is some nefarious Scary Pathological Aspect to this, Imagine if you called gambling addiction "addiction to going outside" and doomed the discourse to constantly bounce between "ok SOME outside activities are bad, you need to have a good relationship with how you interact" and "theres nothing wrong with going outside dumbass" "gambling addiction" is an invention of the gambling industry leveraged to pathologise the human misery inflicted on purpose as part of their business model and divert discussions of that misery and suffering away from regulatory and political interventions that could prevent that harm and towards biomedicalized management of those experiencing that (again--foreseeable, inevitable, industry-working-as-intended) harm

Whether it's a failure or not depends on whether they're living in yurts by choice because it's their traditional way of living, or they're doing it because it's cheap and they can't afford anything else. (There are probably also some sanitation issues—I don't think most yurts have running water, so public infrastructure would have to make up the difference there.) And you do need some minimal qualifications for assessing that: talking to the people living in the yurts would be a good start.

I've been using Vivaldi as my logged in browser for years. I like the double tab bar groups, session management, email client, sidebar and tab bar on mobile. It is strange to me that tab bar isn't a thing on mobile on other browsers despite phones having way more vertical space than computers. Although for internet searches I use a seperate lighter weight browser that clears its data on close. Ecosia also been using for years. For a while it was geniunely better than the other search engines I had tried but nowadays it's worse since it started to return google translate webpage translation links based on search region instead of the webpages themselves. Also not sure what to think about the counter they readded after removing it to reduce the emphasis on quantity over quality like a year ago. I don't use duckduckgo as its name and the way privacy communities used to obsess about it made me distrust it for some reason

I think it's because it's a desktop app only (for now) and most people are consuming content on handhelds? Just a theory.. Freetube does need an app. I use a fork of NewPipe called PipeBender on Android and it works most of the time but not all the time. Freetube has never failed me though.

The platform owners don’t consider engagement to me be participation in meaningful discourse. Engagement to them just means staying on the platform while seeing ads. If bots keep people doing that those platforms will keep letting them in.
