I wrote a thread related to this almost 2 years ago:

1/ I've been in the #openSource scene for a long time. From BEFORE this was even called "open-source" — back BEFORE the phrase "open-source" even got coined and became common. Here is a problem with most open-source software projects have, including most #Fediverse software —

The TL;DR is —
Most open-source software is created by software-engineers — and usually no one with UI, UX, or product backgrounds are involved.
Creating new products is a different skill-set — usually labeled under product, UX, and UI.
And, although some software-engineers have UX, UI, or product skills — most don't.
So, when they do open-source — they often just copy / mimick. -
