YouTube rolls out more unskippable ads that make viewers wait even longer to watch videos - Dexerto

Firefox and ublock on desktop works just as well.
I would disagree, you’re still directly communicating with YouTube servers without a proxy in-between. Invidious or Piped are the proxies you need, they let you blend in with the other users of their services making data-collection on YouTube’s part difficult.
We need to make feeding the algorithm as difficult as possible.

I’m actually looking to start a YouTube channel, but I don’t know if I should even bother since YouTube seems to be going out of its way to try to kill itself

I seem to have the right stuff on my laptop, but not on my phone. When I play escape games on the phone I occasionally need a walkthrough video, so I'm switching between 3 apps: the game, my notes (a paint app) and the video. Walkthrough videos typically have an ad at the beginning and maybe one in the middle, and I don't mind watching 15-30 seconds of ads for the YouTuber's work.
This used to be pretty seamless, but a couple weeks ago something changed. When switching back to YouTube, it would not return me to the video but to the home screen. I have to go to "You" to get the video I was just watching, and when I click it it plays the ads again, then jumps to where I left off. So now every time I switch away I have to view an ads again when I switch back, which really sucks balls. I don't think the phone is running out of memory since other apps I have open switch right back to where they left off. So I'd love to get something that will skip all that.
Revanced still working great for me.

Have they made anything like this for Roku yet?
I think playlet is what I used on roku. Not as nice as smarttube as you can't log in I don't think, but you can still subscribe and stuff, just doesn't transfer between devices. Personally didn't really use it, just set up for my wife.

AdNauseum. Not only does it block ads but it also fucks with advertisers by sending false clicks that cost them money.

That explains the adblocker crackdown and enshittification of paid. Funnily enough, this pattern got me to block ads.
You weren't blocking ads before?

They’re blocking it actively now. For me, it requires a tampermonkey script to bypass the blocker check in Firefox.
There's some A/B testing going on, for sure. My ublock origin on Firefox has never had issues

Just cross post to a couple different hosters.

You weren't blocking ads before?
Ive been blocking youtube ads for like a year now. But when it was like one or two minutes every 10-20 I didn't mind watching on an app that didn't have ad block. It got worse and I got fed up.

It will continue until it overshoots TV and they're all 3x more ad than vid.

It's not. Alphabet is already making billions off our data. Just use uBlock or ReVanced or whatever and don't shovel more money into their greedy pockets.
What would happen if all users start using adblockers, or the value of ads starts to fall?
I do not support the current, ad-driven, model of the internet. However, since the costs of subscriptions are increasing, while salaries are going downhill, it is apparent that ads is (seemingly) the only viable choice for now.
In the economy we currently live in, all of world's wealth is slowly moving to ad networks.
Even donation driven models are currently straggling. Just look at the fediverse. The people donating to their instances are not enough to sustain them.
Capitalism has absolutely destroyed everything. The greed of stakeholders has milked most people. At some point people will stop buying the useless things or services promoted via advertisements, just because they will not be able to afford them. Then, no subscriptions, no point of advertising, no donators, no people hosting fediverse instances, just world hunger.

Do other services! Like Peertube and then mirror videos on youtube and odyssey so you still get traction

Not the previous commenter but on mobile, a good few years ago I didnt block ads i didnt mind something skippable or a short interruption but they were just that very short and not in the way. I started going out of my way to block ads when they abused it

I guess I need someone to explain it to me, because they even fixed their typo.

Well because an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, i dont base my actions on how poorly someone else has acted. I just try and do the right thing.

And if they have your data, they didnt steal it, you signed it over or they bought it from someone you signed it over to, personal data is rarely stolen, mostly just handed off and then people act like they put a gun to their head to get it.

I'm grateful I have the basic technical knowledge of how to install an adblocker.
