I don't always support censorship. Only when it's against opinions I disagree with.

This is treating Twitter as a pornographic website, which the new French law puts more requirements on. If it was just a "I am over 18" button, I don't think pornhub would pull out(pun unintended). It's easy to bypass with a VPN or tor, but are you going to pull that out just to doom scroll for a hate fix? Maybe, but that's a choice a lot of people are going to have to make.

Do it.
The world needs more social media regulation, not less.
Clearly.

I'm all for making it exceedingly less convenient for people become radicalized, personally. Age verification isn't a magic bullet, but still very much worth doing.

Damn, France.

The EU is planning on introducing mandatory e-identification for everything online (1). This is just laying the foundations (for the children!!!!)

Additionally it's convenient tooling to have in place for other undesirable behaviour, as our EU overlords are getting Orbanised.

This comment i would used to jump on about how important it was to keep the internet free and anonymous..
But lately i’ve come to the conclusion that real freedom is a dream that humanity is not ready for. There are times when i even think, some people simply shouldn’t be allowed to access the internet

Theoretically the German id card at least is capable of providing just the age and just that in an easy to control and secure fashion over NFC.
In practice there is exactly one shitty smartphone app available to interact with other shitty smartphone apps to give them absolutely everything available on the card.
And it doesn't even work.

At first I read the headline to mean that they wanted to use Twitter to act as an age supplier.

For me that ship sailed after Charlottesville. At some point cancer has to be recognized for what it is, and as we saw with ISIS, most of the world seems to find regulation of social media acceptable when it's done to curb terrorist ideologies.

Yeah, this is what governments keep saying to critics: "We're only reading the age, no other info. Don't worry about it. We will definitely 100% not read any other info"

What you're saying is that the government should control access to information, so that people will hold the correct ideology.
I don't think that's a game that a liberal democracy can win.

Nice straw man.

Is this Musk's and meta end goal? Make internet ultra shitty so that every social network needs age verification/user real data so they can use their dominant position to target people more viciously?
It's not like of 99% of people cares about giving their actual name and details.

TBH, age verification services exist.
If it becomes law, integrating them shouldn't be more difficult than integrating a OIDC login. So everyone should be able to do it.
Depending on these services, you might not even need to give a name, or, because they are separate entities, don't give your name to the platform using them.
Other parts of regulation are more difficult. Like these "upload filters" that need to figure out if something shared via a service is violating any copyright before it is made available.
