  • I've seen catbox.moe used around here quite a lot, and I've used it too, mainly for allowing hot-linking to embed media.

Patreon and Ko-Fi restricted Catbox's account based on CSAM reports (assuming from the e-mails).
Ko-Fi has restored the account after providing information on the moderation of such content:

I responded to Ko-Fi with a bit more in depth of the systems Catbox uses to monitor uploads for malicious content, and they reinstated my Ko-fi account on Thursday, May 22nd.

So, they got kicked for hosting CSAM...

    And in this post:

I’ve received many emails over the years regarding the cost of datacenter colocation, including things like “why is it so high”, “why don’t use you [insert cloud provider here]”. The reason I colocate my own hardware is for multiple reasons, including the reason for this post. I can manage my own hardware (I’m actually smart sometimes!), upgrade it with 1-off costs (instead of needing to change plans, increasing monthly costs, etc), purchase new hardware when needed, and plan accordingly. I also don’t have to worry about getting my service suspended by providers like Cloudflare or other shitty dedicated server providers who balk at the first abuse report.

Meaning it's really just running in their closet, they've received multiple reports there's CSAM, and they just keep operating?

Like, am I wrong or is this person really just bald faced admitting to a serious crime while begging for money?

In the reply to Patreon they mentioned having some automated and manual ways of removing CSAM, plus "closely working with NCMEC", but I have no idea what that means.
And these statistics of resolved reports: https://www.missingkids.org/content/dam/missingkids/pdfs/cybertiplinedata2024/2024-notifications-by-ncmec-resulting-content-removal.pdf

Total number of reports of 128 resolved on average in 1.91 days. Less than half the time spent by Amazon, Google and Microsoft (for Bing).

While I've never directly used them I've definitely seen content hosted by them. I've also seen CSAM promptly removed by them (I work for a hosting provider and occasionally will forward a report their way). I'll drop them some mons.

    In the reply to Patreon

    Yes...

In communications to the people who banned them, who they rely on for donations to flow thru they act like they take it seriously...

In the blog begging for donations there's no mention of moderation and a few parts where they make it clear moderation is a joke to them

That's one of many signs from your link that they know what's happening, they know that's why they're getting a decent chunk of donations.

You think they're lying about having their hardware in a colo?

CSAM is against their terms of use. Afaik they remove it both using some automated systems, as well as manually.

I'm not an expert on how CSAM is hosted online, but yeah:

The reason I colocate my own hardware is for multiple reasons, including the reason for this post.

He flat out said a main reason he uses his own hardware is he knows he's hosting CSAM...

So I would not be surprised if it's just in his closet.

Still shocked he'd just admit it online begging for money and people would defend it tho...

Payment processors and financial institutions sure do seem to hold disproportionate amounts of power.

The reason for his post was that a provider shut down his access on the accusation of CSAM, without (according to him) much if any investigation. Cloud providers have all manner of automated systems for reporting CSAM, copyright, and other potential abuses, and generally seem to take a guilty-until-proven-innocent approach. They may or may not even be responsive to defense or explanation. Colo isolates you from abuse of those systems.

MFW I forget we are talking about two random companies who provide a service that can't be described as either of those things

I'm starting to wonder if you're the one uploading CSAM and then reporting the guy. Pretty typical attack vector online. Plus you're here, clearly not listening to reason and attempting to paint the guy hosting this service as the bad guy.

Life isn't a conspiracy theory, the hardware is likely colocated. Tf is your issue, weirdo?

I think you're missing some key points.

    1. Any file hosting service, no matter what, will have to deal with CSAM as long as people are able to upload to it. No matter what. This is an inescapable fact of hosting and the internet in general.

    2. Because CSAM is so ubiquitous and constant, one can only do so much to moderate any services, whether they're a large corporation are someone with a server in their closet. All of the larger platforms like 'meta', google, etc., mostly outsource that moderation to workers in developing countries so they don't have to also provide mental health counselling, but that's another story.

    3. The reason they own their own hardware is because the hosting services can and will disable your account and take down your servers if there's even a whiff of CSAM. Since it's a constant threat, it's better to own your own hardware and host everything from your closet so you don't have to eat the downtime and wait for some poor bastard in Nigeria to look through your logs and reinstate your account (not sure how that works exactly though).

why do allow a romantic partner to set boundaries on the potential relationships I could form with others it also just hurt to imagine him being with someone else and preferring them over me My problem is exclusivity being the standard or default requirement for almost everyone, in many case just because that's what everyone else is doing. This deletes, say 95% of the population. It's already a very improbable thing to hook up with someone compatible and have that requirement, unless you have a very high "hook up attempt" rate than you can just forget the whole thing as unrealistic, which I did a long time ago. It's just not going to happen, no interested, the terms are unacceptable I'm not even going to waste any time trying.

That's always worth considering. A phone app doesn't take a big operating budget to launch and maintain. Especially for state-actors.

I believed they were doing such things against budding competitors long before the LLM era. My test is simple. Replace it with China. Would the replies be the opposite of what you've recieved so far? The answer is yes. Absolutely people would be frothing at the mouth about China being bad actors. Western tech bros are just as paranoid, they copy off others, they steal ideas. When we do it it's called "innovation".

This is where the magic of near meaningless corpo-babble comes in. The layoffs are part of a plan to aspirationally acheive the goal of $10b revenue by EoY 2025. What they are actually doing is a significant restructuring of the company, refocusing by outside hiring some amount of new people to lead or be a part of departments or positions that haven't existed before, or are being refocused to other priorities... ... But this process also involves laying off 500 of the 'least productive' or 'least mission critical' employees. So, technically, they can, and are, arguing that their new organizational paradigm will be so succesful that it actually will result in increased revenue, not just lower expenses. Generally corpos call this something like 'right-sizing' or 'refocusing' or something like that. ... But of course... anyone with any actual experience with working at a place that does this... will tell you roughly this is what happens: Turns out all those 'grunts' you let go of, well they actually do a lot more work in a bunch of weird, esoteric, bandaid solutions to keep everything going, than upper management was aware of... because middle management doesn't acknowledge or often even understand that that work was being done, because they are generally self-aggrandizing narcissist petty tyrants who spend more time in meetings fluffing themselves up than actually doing any useful management. Then, also, you are now bringing on new, outside people who look great on paper, to lead new or modified apartments... but they of course also do not have any institutional knowledge, as they are new. So now, you have a whole bunch of undocumented work that was being done, processes which were being followed... which is no longer being done, which is not documented.... and the new guys, even if they have the best intentions, now have to spend a quarter or two or three figuring out just exactly how much pre-existing middle management has been bullshitting about, figuring out just how much things do not actually function as they ssid it did... So now your efficiency improving restructuring is actually a chaotic mess. ... Now, this 'right sizing' is not always apocalyptically extremely bad, but it is also essentially never totally free from hiccups... and it increases stress, workload, and tensions between basically everyone at the company, to some extent. Here's Forbes explanation of this phenomenon, if you prefer an explanation of right sizing in corpospeak: https://www.forbes.com/advisor/business/rightsizing/

Sure thing! So glad I could be helpful! I don't blame you. It's the only thing I'm keeping a Win10 dual-boot for right now, and to their credit, it does work quite well in Windows. We've had a ton of fun with our set. In the meantime, I'm keeping up with the project but not actively tinkering with it myself, because it's exciting but also not quite there yet. It's at least given me hope that it can be done though! I'm confident we'll see significant gains sooner rather than later. Hats off to them. (Once my income stabilizes I'll gotta pitch them some funds...) Envision has made it VERY convenient to get set up, but the whole process still saps more time than "Fire it up and play." So maybe play with it at some point, but either way definitely keep your ear to the ground. I'm hoping in the future we'll get to use it for things like Godot XR or Blender integration.
