Small minority of people who care about this and end up affected will just leave for something else if custom ROMs stops being an option and dev scene dies out. Not every Dev on F-Droid wants to hand over their info to Google. You can argue that Google doesn't care because they are a minority and custom ROM users provide no benefit to them, which is true. But to act like people are stuck with Google if the feature they care about affects apps that interest them are stuck with Google isn't true either. They are already doing stuff that is unusual from regular users. Don't worry mainstream won't be affected. I'm talking about the weird people sideloading, degoogling, and more likely to be running custom ROMs.

Governments like everything and everyone in their own little stack and in the government's self established status quo. When Paula Protester comes along with her LGBTQ++ agenda, governments don't like that. Paula Protester represents instability to the status quo established by the ruling class. Governments don't like instability. Governments like everyone sorted, coallated, and stapled, all in their respective stacks, so dissidents and social change advocates are viewed as adversaries and are not welcome. If it's genuuinely 'for the chirren' then it would seem to me that making parents be parents and take responsibility for their child's actions would go a very long way. However, we make laws with the lowest common denominator in mind. I don't want your children involved in adult activities online. However, just like any education program, the success is determined by parental involvement in their child's daily lives, and it starts at home. It's a lot easier to make government responsible for the child's developement, than actually requiring parents to be parents. I hear parents say 'I'm not technologically inclined.' Well, get there. The safety and well being of your child hangs in the balance. Take a class, read some of the millions of step by step tutorials that exist all over the internet. Ask some questions in forums. The possibilities are endless. Protecting your child is work, just like rasing them is work, and therein lies the issue.

I admire your positivity. I do not share it though, because from what I have seen, because even if there are open weights, the one with the biggest datacenter will in the future hold the most intelligent and performance model. Very similar to how even if storage space is very cheap today, large companies are holding all the data anyway. AI will go the same way, and thus the megacorps will and in some extent already are owning not only our data, but our thoughts and the ability to modify them. I mean, sponsored prompt injection is just the first thought modifying thing, imagine Google search sponsored hits, but instead it's a hyperconvincing AI response that subtly nudges you to a certain brand or way of thinking. Absolutely terrifies me, especially with all the research Meta has done on how to manipulate people's mood and behaviour through which social media posts they are presented with
