@general-discussion I'm messing around with nodebb because I wanted to see if it was worth the activitypub integration so I figured that I'd share my thoughts here.

setup was a bit of a mess due to having to add a bunch of external repos (my servers use debian) but I did eventually get it running. certbot was also giving me a hard time but I managed by running it before I disabled the default nginx site.

at first glance it seems pretty capable! I was surprised that file uploads just work, and was also surprised that federation runs out of the box. I have concerns about object storage so I might have to tighten things up there.

I find the harmony theme a little disorienting as someone who grew up on phpBBs and simple machines forums and vbulletins, but it might be a bit more welcoming to those who are more accustomed to modern web apps. I'd look into theming but the lack of documentation is a bit dire!

federation is cool but I had to disable it because I didn't want anyone finding my super secret test forum lol. if I put this out into production I might just limit it to a few sites just to reduce the amount of moderation overhead, having an open network that anyone can join is a double edged sword and the remote moderation tools seem pretty lacking.

that's all for now but I'll keep investigating! this is really cool. also if anyone's ported subsilver or whatever to this then let me know so I feel like I'm at home again haha
