Counterpoint: it is NOT an unhealthy relationship. A relationship has more than one person in it. It might be considered an unhealthy behavior. I don't think the problem is solvable if we keep treating the Speak'n'spell like it's participating in this. Corporations are putting dangerous tools in the hands of vulnerable people. By pretending the tool is a person, we're already playing their shell game. But yes, the tool seems primed for enabling self-harm.

Have seen emails at work that were AI generated, but they made no disclaimer. Then someone points out how wildly incorrect it was and they just say "oh whoops, not my fault, I just ask ed an LLM". They set things up to take credit if people liked it, and used the LLMs are just stupid as an excuse when it doesn't fly.

XMPP is significantly less decentralized, allowing them to """cut corners""" compared to Matrix protocol implementation, and scale significantly better. (In heavy quotes, as XMPP isn't really cutting corners, but true decentralization requires more work to achieve seemingly "the same result") An XMPP or IRC channel with a few thousand users is no problem, wheras Matrix can have problems with that. On the other hand, any one Matrix homeserver going down does not impact users that aren't specifically on that homeserver, whereas XMPP is centralized enough that it can take down a whole channel. Meanwhile IRC is a 90s protocol that doesn't make any sense in the modern world of mainly mobile devices. XMPP also doesn't change much, the last proper addition to the protocol (from what I can tell, on the website) was 2024-08-30 https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0004.html

I think it's good that Reddit is trying to continue to allow adult content within the legal framework in which it must operate. I guess what I'm not clear on it is what the legal framework is for verification services. Absent rules that require robust privacy protections market forces will push a race to the bottom in terms of cost and data security will be the first to take a hit. I know this might seem weird but I think this is one of those cases where a blockchain based smart contract might be the best solution. I'm not exactly sure, as any system that allows one to consume content generally also allows one to copy it, but having a system defined in code in a publicly auditable manner that cannot be changed without notice seems to me to have the capacity to grant the most reassurance. I mean I assume that all the verification company is doing now is verifying a person's age and then giving a kind of authorization token that's cryptographically secure that basically says "the owner of this cryptographic key is of age".
